KBRA Affirms Ratings for Mutual Bancorp
30 Oct 2026 | New York
KBRA affirms the senior unsecured debt rating of BBB, the subordinated debt rating of BBB-, and the short-term debt rating of K3 for Hyannis, Massachusetts-based Mutual Bancorp (“Mutual” or “the company”). In addition, KBRA affirms the deposit and senior unsecured debt ratings of BBB+, the subordinated debt rating of BBB, and the short-term deposit and debt ratings of K2 for its subsidiary, Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank. The Outlook for all long-term ratings is Stable.
Key Credit Considerations
The ratings are supported by Mutual Bancorp's expanded geographic footprint and increasingly diversified loan and deposit portfolios, further enhanced by the recent acquisition of Bluestone Bank ("Bluestone") on July 1, 2026. Moreover, profitability has improved modestly with ROA increasing to 0.60% in 1H26 from 0.32% in 2025, supported by margin expansion and lower credit costs. That said, we note that earnings have historically faced pressure from the company's sizable concentration in lower-yielding residential mortgages (70% of total loans at 2Q26), which have been slower to reprice given their longer duration, contributing to profitability and NIM tracking below similarly rated peers. However, NIM improved to 2.94% in 1H26, benefiting from declining funding costs, the use of floating-rate interest rate swaps, and purchase accounting accretion. Management has also been selectively allowing certain non-relationship loans at Fidelity Co-Operative Bank ("Fidelity") to run off and selling residential mortgages, with proceeds being reinvested into higher-yielding, more liquid investment securities. This strategy should support the margin and liquidity profile while reducing exposure to longer-duration assets and certain commercial credits. Earnings also benefit from a stable fee revenue base, primarily derived from wealth management and retail banking services, with noninterest income representing 19% of operating revenue in 1H26. While Mutual has historically exhibited a comparatively less favorable efficiency ratio, noninterest expense remains contained at 2.6% of average assets.
Mutual has historically exhibited conservative credit management, supported by a predominantly residential mortgage portfolio and minimal credit losses prior to the borrower fraud event at Fidelity in 3Q25. Although the borrower fraud event resulted in elevated charge-offs and nonperforming assets, KBRA acknowledges management's subsequent efforts to strengthen credit oversight and centralize credit administration across the organization. NPAs remained elevated at 1.18% of loans at 2Q26 reflecting continued problem credits at Fidelity. Management expects to resolve several remaining Fidelity problem credits over the near term, although additional provisioning of ~$6.7 million was recorded in 3Q26. Despite maintaining comparatively modest loan loss reserves (0.73% of loans at 2Q26), the ratings are supported by strong regulatory capital levels, reflected in a CET1 ratio of 14.4% as of 2Q26, benefiting, in part, from the company's lower-risk loan composition (risk-weighted density of 62%). The recently completed Bluestone acquisition is estimated to reduce 100 bps of regulatory capital, although management expects capital ratios to gradually rebuild through retained earnings, supported by the company's expanded scale and potential operating efficiencies.
Rating Sensitivities
Positive rating movement is not expected over the intermediate term; however, a return to historical credit quality levels, sustained strong capital metrics, and improved profitability more in line with similarly rated peers would be viewed positively. Conversely, a rating downgrade is unlikely, though further deterioration in the credit or liquidity profile, or a more aggressive approach to capital management, could negatively pressure the ratings.
