KBRA affirms the deposit and senior unsecured debt ratings of BBB, the subordinated debt rating of BBB-, and the short-term deposit and debt ratings of K3 for Chubbuck, Idaho-based Idaho Central Credit Union (“Idaho Central” or "ICCU"). The Outlook for all long-term ratings is Stable.

Key Credit Considerations

Idaho Central’s ratings are supported by a consistent earnings track record, favorable asset quality, and strong market share in its core Idaho footprint, complemented by a growing membership and deposit franchise across Washington and Arizona. Profitability has remained solid, with ROA of ~1.2% for 1H26, supported by a loan-heavy balance sheet (89% of total assets at 2Q26) and meaningful noninterest income contribution (29% of total revenue). NIM has improved in recent years, though remains comparatively modest relative to similarly sized credit unions, reflecting ICCU’s member-oriented operating model and competitive deposit pricing. The sizeable core deposit base supports funding stability, although strong loan growth (20% YoY) places greater emphasis on deposit generation to support continued expansion, with the loan-to-share and deposit ratio near 100% and comparatively limited on-balance-sheet liquidity is offset by meaningful contingent funding capacity. Nonetheless, consistent earnings continue to support solid internal capital generation and balance sheet growth.

Asset quality remains a key rating strength, supported by disciplined underwriting and a highly granular, predominantly consumer-focused loan portfolio. Credit costs remain manageable despite some normalization in consumer performance, with NCOs of 0.37% through 1H26, while NPAs remained low at 0.42% of loans at 2Q26. Although the loan loss reserve remains below similarly sized peers at 0.61% of loans, partly reflecting ICCU’s favorable historical loss performance, reserves cover NPLs by 1.5x. Commercial credit performance also remains sound, with modest exposure to higher-risk property types, including office and hotels, though some borrowers have experienced pressure from higher refinancing costs.

ICCU’s capital metrics remains comparatively modest for the rating category, reflecting strong balance sheet growth that has outpaced otherwise solid internal capital generation. The $80 million subordinated debt issuance in 4Q23 provides additional regulatory capital support, while increased use of loan participations helps moderate retained asset growth. While capitalization remains a relative constraint, KBRA considers current levels adequate given ICCU’s favorable asset quality, consistent earnings generation, and overall risk profile. Looking ahead, KBRA expects capital ratios to remain relatively stable, supported by continued earnings retention and active balance sheet management.

Rating Sensitivities

Improved loss-absorbing capacity, reflected in stronger capital ratios and loan loss reserve coverage more closely aligned with similarly rated peers, together with sustained above-peer profitability and strong asset quality, including contained charge-offs and low levels of problem assets, could support positive rating momentum over time. Conversely, pressure on capital ratios, particularly a decline in the net worth ratio below 8.0%, material deterioration in asset quality resulting in elevated credit costs and charge-offs, sustained weakening in profitability, or meaningful core deposit outflows could result in negative rating pressure.
